(Update 01/09/05 - Subsidised Insurance)
Aprilia today announced the all new Pegaso 650 Strada at the
Intermot Munich motorcycle show. Based around a development of the
Yamaha 660 single cylinder engine, the new bike is described as
an "agile urban supermotard". The engine is built in Italy,
not far from Aprilia's Noale factory, and has been breathed on by
Aprilia's technicians to achieve the mid and top end rush so typical
of Aprilia's bikes. Fast steering and an excellent steering lock
will make this bike a mean street machine and ideal commuting thrill,
but also a capable multipurpose motorcycle with "the emphasis
on fun". KTM's Duke seems to have had some influence here and
it should steal much of the thunder from Ducati's new 620 Multistrada.
Power is around 50bhp @ 6,250rpm from the dry sump, four valve engine
and the weight is a highly respectable 168kg. The frame is a compact
steel single spar arrangement that is said to have class leading
rigidity. The Strada's aluminium alloy wheels copy the wheel design
of the RSV 1000 R Factory supersports.
The seat height is low for it's class at 780mm,
so it should be suitable for riders of all statures, including the
ladies, who ought to get their feet firmly on the ground. For the
tallest riders there's an additional kit to raise the height to
820mm.
It includes two storage spaces: one on the tank
that is opened by a button on the handlebars, the other is under
the seat and is large enough for a set of waterproofs. There's even
a luggage net for additional storage.
Other nice touches include self canceling indicators
and an electronic immobilizer.
An Enduro version is said to be waiting in the wings.
The Rotax powered Pegaso is said to continue in production for the
time being.
UK price will be £4,999 with availability
in May 2005.
Update 05/05/05.
Nip down to your newsagents for Aprilia Pegaso Strada's first
UK review in MCN. They have put it top of its class, beating all
the main manufacturers on Italian style and fun. We were also
at the launch, and had the time of our lives scratching around
the twisties in beautiful Sardinia. We were so impressed with
how accessible and easy to ride it is that we immediately ordered
two for our training school!
Update 07/07/05.
We've now received our first batch of Stradas, so nip into the
shop and have a look at them in the flesh, they really are nice.
We'll be putting a demo bike on the road when we receive the next
batch in a couple of days.
