Aprilia's long awaited new middleweight 750 has arrived.
Based around a brand new 750cc 90° v twin developed initially by parent Piaggio's engine department and tuned by Aprilia, which puts out 95hp @9,000rpm and 60lbft of torque at 8,000rpm using DOHC and four valves per cylinder and a dry sump.
Like the newly announced WSB race engine, and a first for this category of bike, this v-twin has a fly-by-wire system with the throttle bodies controlled directly by the Magneti Marelli ECU using not only the position of the throttle grip in the rider's right hand but also other parameters such the engine speed and gear selected. This should particularly help with smooth running at low engine speeds and at initial startup. The electrics use a CAN system (controlled area network), a digital wiring harness that consists of only a couple of wires, saving weight and improving diagnosis.
The 750 Shiver is billed as a "first big bike" so the emphasis is put on ease of riding and good manners. Not by any means does this imply that it'll be boring, with Aprilia at the helm it certainly wont, but it will be vary refined, especially for an entirely new model.
The Aprilia engineers like to point out that the engine has plenty of tuning possibilities, not least by upping it's comparatively low compression ratio, but also through more aggressive engine fuel mapping. Potentially turning a future variant into a Ducati 749 or Triumph 675 beater.
The exhaust is entirely made of stainless steel.
The chassis has benefited from the huge success of the SXV supermoto race bike, by using a steel trellis for the upper part of the frame bolted to large aluminium side plates for an optimal blend of rigidity and lightness. The 43mm front forks are tipped with radial brakes (again, a first for it's class), steel braided lines and 320mm discs. The rear shock has been mounted on the side of the swing arm to allow for an optimal exhaust manifold design, keep the bike compact and to keep the shock away from the heat of the exhaust system.
Colours: Black, White, Orange, Silver and Blue.
The dry weight is 189kg.
Update 29/04/07. MCN have had a first ride on a pre production model of the Shiver and they really rate it, particularly liking the smoothness of the fly-by-wire fuelling, powerful engine, build quality and looks. They think it's going to give its Japanese competition (Hornet, Fazer, Z750, SV650) a serious fright . Nip down to your newsagent and see if you can get a copy.
